Samsung has released their first model in the NX series, the NX10. It is an interchangeable-lens camera model which is slightly less bulky compared to DSLRs. It is a hybrid DSLR camera that is pretty small and light which can be used like any other point-and-shoot camera and the lens can be interchanged using adaptors. It seems to be a bridge between the DSLRs and the compact cameras. It has its rivals or counterparts from other makers such as Panasonic and Olympus.

Specifications and Performance:

The technical specifications of NX10 include:

It measures 3.4×4.8×1.6 (HWD) inches and weighs 14oz.

A 14.6MP lens with CMOS type of sensor.

An electronic viewfinder is provided along optical image stabilization.

The display is a 3.0 inch fixed LCD display.

A maximum video resolution of 1280×720 pixels at 30fps and the storage formats is H.264 and MPEG-4.

The estimated battery life is 400 shots.

The price of NX10 is USD699.99.

The NX10 is pretty small, compact and handy. And yet has the hybrid characters i.e. it has many features that you want for having better pictures and small enough to just fit in your bag without any hassles. It is comparatively sleek than the traditional DSLRs and very well tuned in for your grip. It measures at 3.4 inches high, 4.8 inches wide and 1.6 inches deep. It weighs pretty less as well. The NX10 lens is of 14.6MP. The CMOS sensor brings a better quality pictures and lower crop ratio than its counterparts. It has the ability to shoot 720pixels high definition at 30 frames per second in video shooting mode. The video storage format is MPEG-4 and H.264.

The electric viewfinder is the traditional viewfinder among the DSLRs. The users can use this electronic viewfinder through the 3.0 inch LCD screen or the eye-level viewfinder. The LCD screen looks bright and sharp and the AMOLED menu is neatly done. The graphics used for navigating the menu are neatly done and supposed to be the prettiest. The Fn (Function) shows the common user settings for ease of use. The other menu can be automatically navigated. The eye-level viewfinder has a proximity sensor that will automatically shut down the LCD display and turns on the eye-level viewfinder as you put your eye into it.

The focusing of the hybrid NX10 camera is pretty decent but could have been better with the focusing speed. The usability has been made as easy as possible for the user with the AMOLED menu. The bright and sharp LCD covers the majority of the back. The buttons are neatly done. The feature of a hybrid camera has been put into the small body. The lens kit provided is 18-55mm kit lens. The 50-200mm telephoto zoom along with the kit lens provide optical image stabilization and effectively reduces the blur. The AMOLED LCD does well with the zooming in of objects. The image stabilization is commendable. The video looks very decent on the viewfinder.

Conclusion:

The Samsung NX10 lacks the sleekness of other counterparts, but it can be neglected as this is an interchangeable lens model. The sensor used is pretty large and the hand grip over NX10 is much better than its counterparts. The high resolution of the lens might reduce any active noise advantages. The pricing of NX10 is quite more comparatively. It has an optical stabilization and doesn’t have the in camera stabilization which is present in its competitors. The NX10 can shoot videos at 720p falling short of the DSLRs which shoot at 1080p.

The user friendly menu and the buttons around the camera might pose a problem to its competitors. All in all, this camera is a good choice for those who want a full-fledged DSLR and yet be compatible. The DSLR features are not completely provided, but are pretty sufficient for the starter. Except for the comparative high price, it is a good choice for those who want to upgrade from other point-and-shoot cameras and do not want to carry heavy DSLRs.

Kodak has announced its latest addition to its family; the Kodak EasyShare Z980 is the first megazoom camera to have a wide angle lens that has the zooming ability of up to an attractive 24x zoom along with some outstanding capabilities such as smart capture and the control over the camera. The camera is bulky but the bulkiness has to be ignored since it’s a pioneering effort. The major plus points are the battery backup and the comfortable design. The pricing has also been made very affordable for the features added.

Key features/specifications:

It measures at 4.9×3.5×4.1 (HWD) and weighs 18.7 ounces.

The Z980 is of 12MP and the prints can be up to 30”x40”.

The LCD display is of 3 inches and the resolution is 230K dots with an electronic viewfinder.

The lens is a 26mm wide-angle zoom lens with 24x optical zooming.

The image and video capture is of High Definition.

A hot shoe option is provided for a Kodak P20 flash.

A vertical shutter release is provided for user comfort.

The file format for images is JPEG and for video, it is MOV H.264.

The highest size of resolution is 4000×3000 pixels for image and 1280/720 for video.

The image can be stabilized mechanically or electronically.

The battery type is NIMH rechargeable; 4 AA cells, pre charged.

Performance and Working:

The Z980 comes with a price tag of USD399.95 which is approximately INR18500. The exterior body is strong, well built covered with black shiny plastic. The 12MP sensor enables you to crop pictured without any compromises made on the image clarity. The Z980 provides a 3.0 inch LCD in which the brightness can be adjusted at five levels. The viewfinder offers great relief to the eyes and the images can be shot after the viewfinder moves through the blurry image to finally indicate the best capture with a beep sound. The Z980 has a vertical shutter release which enables you to shoot vertically as well as horizontally and a detachable grip will help you enjoy shooting vertically while it provides optimum comfort.

Coming to the shooting performance, the click to capture speed is 0.02 seconds and it might be lengthened if flash is enabled. For vertical shooting a plastic grip is included that is screwed to the bottom of the camera so that you have more grip. But it is annoying that you have to put it and remove it each and every time you want to access the SDHC card slot and battery combo compartment. The range of Z980 flash is attractive, reaching some twenty feet at wide angle. And a hot shoe is provided that enables the addition of a desirable external flash. The lens offers optimum apertures at wide angle and telephoto which gives a decent speed. But some noise exists such as barrel distortion in wide angle shots and a pin cushion in telephoto shots. The corners and edges appear a soft and some chromatic disturbances can occur in areas of high contrast.

Quality images can be captured with great accuracy and with default settings being normal. There are various manual shooting modes such as low, natural and high color settings available. The sharpness can also be adjusted. There are various other settings that can be helpful in capturing a better quality of pictures such as lightning control, manual control, multiple scene selection, color modes, face detection etc. The video can be captured at a max of 1280×720 at 30 fps and up to 29 minutes in Z980. The audio and video quality is satisfactory. The long lens of the Z980 is very tempting to bring the distant objects closer. But holding the camera steady in hand is not an easy task. A tripod or any other support for the camera would be good to capture videos and images.

Pros and Cons:

The major plus points are: the ease of use, vibrant color, variety og shooting options, manual control, hot shoe option and a fast start up.

The drawbacks of Z980 are its awkward and bulk body design, noisy photos and the poor battery life which might be disappointing for a few.

Conclusion:

The Z980 has a variety of features that provides the users a range of functions for shooting purpose. It is definitely a contender in the megazoom class of digital cameras. Image quality and the color preciseness were satisfactory as the images produced were noisy. The touch of horizontal and vertical shutter buttons is an attractive feature. The battery life hinders with the usage of flash and monitor. It almost equals the small DSLRs with its ultra zoom capability and with an attachable vertical grip. The full usage of optical zoom with the video capture is definitely a plus as the quality of the video is pretty appreciable.

It provides a wide-angle megazoom lens that provides flexibility and the capability to be fully automatic and manual. Yet, the Kodak EasyShare Z980 cannot be recommended as easy as one can expect. The Z980 has the inability to turn on immediately when you turn off the flash back in shutter priority and manual modes, but you have to switch to aperture priority to turn on the flash and then switch back into shutter or manual mode.

The new range of full HD cameras has been announced by Nikon very recently. Nikon is among the world’s top producers of digital cameras, known for their quality and service of products. Nikon has announced the upcoming of their new range of full HD cameras which will be featuring a wide range of new advanced function. The full HD cameras are the first of its kind from Nikon which is made especially for those who expect more from their compact digital cameras. The Nikon P100 provides a wide capture range and an attractive optical zoom along with a full HD video capture.

The key features are given below:

The P100 is a 10.3 Mega Pixel camera with a CMOS type of image sensor which is illuminated on the backside.

It has a 3 inch LCD display whose resolution is 460K dots with an electronic viewfinder.

The NIKKOR ED glass lens has an amazing 26x optical zoom capability which offers optics that deliver an exceptional high quality images.

The file format for still images is the most common and the most effective JPEG format and that for video is H.264 format.

The highest resolution for an still image is 3648×2736 pixels and for that for a video is 1920×1080 at a frame rate of 30fps.

The image can be stabilized either mechanically or digitally.

The battery is a standard rechargeable Lithium ion battery with a CIPA rate of 250 shots.

The images can be stored in the SD or SDHC cards.

The sport shoot mode offers a high speed of 10fps at full resolution.

There are various modes such as Program, Manual Exposure, Aperture Priority and Shutter priority that offers the users to have a better control over the pictures.

The Active D-Lighting option will minimize any loss of details either in highlights or in shadows. This creates a more superior and natural images.

Smart Portrait System is provided which covers a wide range of advanced functions such as In-Camera Fixing of Red-Eye Fix, Blink Warning, Face-Priority AF, Smile Timer etc. which results in extraordinary images.

The Nikon P100 measures at 3.3×4.5×3.9 (HWD) and comes with a very appreciable price of USD399.95 which is approximately INR18800. The weight of COOLPIX P100 is 17 ounces. The Nikon COOLPIX P100 is all set to hit the markets in March 2010.

The earlier models of Nikon were of 12MP with a CCD sensor. But this model is of 10.3MP with a CMOS type of sensor to improve the shooting momentum and this reduces the noise level in photos where there is insufficient light. The detachable LCD is another attractive feature that lets you to take pictures at various angles, i.e. you need not always hold the camera in-line with your eyes just by pulling the LCD out and tilting it up or down. It can be held above or below your eye level and you can view what you want to capture even at such levels. The 26x optical zoom is another attraction in the P100. Holding the camera still at full zoom is pretty difficult, but the excellent stabilization feature reduces the image blur to a great extent. When this is combined with Nikon’s BSS (Best Shot Selector) option, you might finally end up getting sharp and crisp images. The BSS takes up to 10 shots but saves only the best shot or the clearest shot. There are various shooting modes that are provided for the users to have better control over the images that they take.

The P100 has very sturdy and husky movie options compared to the earlier models. Movies can be recorded in full HD at 30fps with a resolution of 1920×1080. The zoom can be used completely even in the video capture. A stereo microphone is provided on the top of the camera and its working is pretty convincing. The battery and card slots are provided at the bottom of the camera. The battery back up isn’t convincing. The adapter takes three full hours to completely charge the batter from zero.

The Nikon Coolpix P100 is an amazing choice for users. Its compact design is very attractive along with the features included in it. The design is very sturdy with the fast image shooting option and the full HD movie feature being an added advantage. The photo and video quality is pretty poor comparatively and the low battery back up is another drawback. But the Nikon P100 has a lot of other features that you could look out for than just looking at the drawbacks. You can really enjoy this compact P100 is you can keep a check on your image and video quality expectation.
