Cholesterol is the fatty material that is one of the necessary ingredients of our body. It is vital ingredient, but can be fatal if it is in excess amounts and can result in heart attacks or strokes. The standard value varies between 150 to 200mg per 100ml of blood. It exists as either low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or as high-density lipoproteins (HDL). The LDL is considered to be unsafe for the human body.
The causes for high cholesterol include hereditary factors, consumption of food rich in fat, and other causes such as anxiety, stress, smoking, and drinking. The excessive cholesterol levels result in heart attacks, strokes, kidney complications and so on.
The home remedies for controlling high cholesterol levels include:
- Garlic reduces the cholesterol contents. Consuming one clove of garlic daily will help in reducing the level of cholesterol.
- Add turmeric in your diet to reduce the cholesterol.
- Boil a piece of garlic in a glass of water and drink this mixture to reduce cholesterol levels.
- Try consuming coriander in water to reduce the cholesterol levels.
- Mix equal amounts of apple juice and vinegar extracted from apple and grape juice and consume this drink for about a month to reduce cholesterol.
- Replace the vegetable oil or any other oil that you are using for cooking with sunflower oil.
- Raw onion juice helps in reducing blood cholesterol and purifies the blood.
- Consume corn flakes or bran cereals with milk for breakfast. This reduces the cholesterol.
- Consume grape juice or the grape fruits daily. It has compounds that reduce the cholesterol content.
- Mix one tsp each of lime flower, chicory root and 1½ tsp of ginger rhizome and fenugreek seeds in 250ml of water and consume the mixture. This reduces the blood cholesterol.
- Beans such as Soya bean, lima bean, kidney beans and other legumes help in reduction of cholesterol.
- Add finely chopped Onion pieces to butter milk and add a small amount of black pepper powder to it. Consume this combination regularly.
- A regular exercise and balanced low fat-high fiber diet is required to keep the blood cholesterol levels low. Food rich in vitamins is essential to reduce the blood cholesterol.
Apart from these remedies, avoid smoking and alcohol. Limit the intake of salt and sodium rich foods. Proper exercise along with a proper diet should be followed to keep the cholesterol levels low.
