Due to recent trends, retirement plans are now not just subjected to increasing cost of living or social insecurities. Hence, now you don’t need to save for your retirement but need to invest for it.

Previously, people were quite happy with the retirement plans offered by their companies. Later with Enron upsets and similar events people got dissatisfied by their company’s retirement plan. Now we have numerous retirement plans that tend to suffice our future requirements.

Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificate of deposits and money market accounts are excellent sources for evenly growing your money. Returns on these are received regularly and can be easily reinvested after its maturity. Moreover you need not specify anyone that these returns are for your retirement.

Another popular retirement plan is Individual Retirement Account (IRA). These are privileged to be tax free unless you withdraw funds. IRA’s also provide for deducting your contributions from the taxes which you owe. A newer type of IRA is Roth IRA. With Roth, you pay taxes on the investing amount but cash out remains tax free. IRA’s can be opened at any bank whereas Roth IRA’s can also be opened at financial institutions.

Similar type of retirement plan is 401 (k). These are generally offered by employers and with the help of a financial planner or an accountant; you can also one of your own. Speaking of self-employed or small business owners, the Keogh plan and simplified employee pension plans are the best choices. The Keogh plan is just another version of IRAs whereas simplified employee pension plan (SEP) is a type of Keogh plan which people find easier to administer than regular Keogh plans.

While investing for retirement, it is important to remember to never rely on simple company retirement plans or even on inheritances which are uncertain. So start investing today for an assured tomorrow.
