Stomach ulcers are more common in people nowadays due to various reasons and affects people at almost all the ages. Stomach ulcers are also known as Peptic ulcers. Stomach ulcers may be defined as the erosion or the breakage or the deterioration of the inner tissue lining of the stomach. The same effect also occurs in intestine, gullet and other regions in the digestive track and named differently for each of them.
There are various causes for stomach ulcers such as:
- A bacteria Helicobacter pylori, is said to be the cause in most of the cases. It might get transmitted from one person through contaminated food and water.
- Certain medications such as aspirin which is helpful in heart diseases has its side effect in causing ulcers when taken excessively and the drugs taken for arthritis also causes ulcers.
- There are various other causes such as: In older people, stomach cancer might initially look like an ulcer. Virus infections can also cause ulcers. These causes are very rare to affect people, but at the same time they cannot be ruled out as well.
The symptoms of stomach ulcers vary as:
- The most common symptom of ulcer is the burning or the irritating feeling in the upper abdominal region.
- Indigestion or vomiting is another symptom.
- Other common symptoms are loss of appetite, nausea, anaemia and loss of weight.
The stomach ulcers can be healed by various methods of treatments.
- Antibiotics destroy the H. pylori bacteria and are the best method of medication to treat ulcers. a doctors consultation might end up in the prescription of a combination of various drugs.
- A group of drugs, called the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) and H2 blockers, known to reduce the acid levels in the stomach and work differently on the inner lining cells of the stomach.
- Reducing the intake of the medicines that causes ulcers can reduce the severity of ulcers. If the intake of such medicines is inevitable, then the doctor might insist you to medicate ulcers as well.
- Surgery has also been a method of treatment. But it is advised only if there are more complications and the ulcer is severe.
