The main causes of chapped lips include: excess exposure to sun or wind, allergic reaction to cosmetics, skin infections, biting of lips and deficiency of vitamin B. Smoking and lack of vitamins and minerals also cause chapped lips. Chapped lips may be a result due to certain medications as well. Sometimes badly placed dentures or spicy food causes chapped lips. The most common symptoms include: roughness, dryness, peeling of skin, cracking, and redness of skin, sensitive or tender lips.

There are various tips or techniques to treat chapped lips, such as:

• Apply lip cream or a balm or petroleum jelly to moisturize the skin.
• Drink enough water; about 6-8 glasses of water.
• If you use an air conditioner, keep the air more humid. Or use a humidifier to keep the air in your home humid.
• Avoid improper dentures.
• You can also apply greasy products such as vitamin E oil or aloe vera gel.
• Avoid sun exposure and also avoid smoking.
• Prepare a home made ointment using 1 tsp each of glycerin, lemon juice and castor oil. Mix them well and apply on your lips at night times. Try the same with a mixture of Vaseline and honey.
• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; include vitamins B and C in your diet.
• Applying a slice of cucumber on your lips will give you immediate relief from the pain.
• You can also apply ghee or butter in night times to treat chapped lips.
• Avoid licking your lips; this will worsen the chapped lips.
