Cholesterol is the fatty material that is one of the necessary ingredients of our body. It is vital ingredient, but can be fatal if it is in excess amounts and can result in heart attacks or strokes. The standard value varies between 150 to 200mg per 100ml of blood. It exists as either low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or as high-density lipoproteins (HDL). The LDL is considered to be unsafe for the human body.

The causes for high cholesterol include hereditary factors, consumption of food rich in fat, and other causes such as anxiety, stress, smoking, and drinking. The excessive cholesterol levels result in heart attacks, strokes, kidney complications and so on.

The home remedies for controlling high cholesterol levels include:

Garlic reduces the cholesterol contents. Consuming one clove of garlic daily will help in reducing the level of cholesterol.

Add turmeric in your diet to reduce the cholesterol.

Boil a piece of garlic in a glass of water and drink this mixture to reduce cholesterol levels.

Try consuming coriander in water to reduce the cholesterol levels.

Mix equal amounts of apple juice and vinegar extracted from apple and grape juice and consume this drink for about a month to reduce cholesterol.

Replace the vegetable oil or any other oil that you are using for cooking with sunflower oil.

Raw onion juice helps in reducing blood cholesterol and purifies the blood.

Consume corn flakes or bran cereals with milk for breakfast. This reduces the cholesterol.

Consume grape juice or the grape fruits daily. It has compounds that reduce the cholesterol content.

Mix one tsp each of lime flower, chicory root and 1½ tsp of ginger rhizome and fenugreek seeds in 250ml of water and consume the mixture. This reduces the blood cholesterol.

Beans such as Soya bean, lima bean, kidney beans and other legumes help in reduction of cholesterol.

Add finely chopped Onion pieces to butter milk and add a small amount of black pepper powder to it. Consume this combination regularly.

A regular exercise and balanced low fat-high fiber diet is required to keep the blood cholesterol levels low. Food rich in vitamins is essential to reduce the blood cholesterol.

Apart from these remedies, avoid smoking and alcohol. Limit the intake of salt and sodium rich foods. Proper exercise along with a proper diet should be followed to keep the cholesterol levels low.

The human ear consists of outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. The causes for infection range from water that has got into the ears to the drainage of sinuses. The home remedies will give u temporary relief, but it is always better to visit the doctor to avoid further complications and spreading of infections. The infection of middle ear is referred to Otitis media and occurs in young children. Another type of infection is the otitis externa is referred to the external ear infection. It is also known as swimmer’s ear.

The causes for ear infection are by a fluid that is produced inside the ear which is common due o cold or some illness. The water due to showering or swimming gets trapped in the ears resulting in formation of fungus and then infection. Smoking also causes ear infection. The most common symptoms include itching or pain inside the ear, fever, dizziness, vomiting sensation, fluid discharge.

Consult your doctor once you find any of the mentioned symptoms. The ear infection can be treated using home remedies, such as:

Consume vitamin c tablets or fruits rich in vitamin c to boost up your immune system.

If the infection is in initial level, then consume Echinacea.

Mix garlic oil or olive oil with lobelia and apply a few drops in ear and plug your ears with cotton.

Put a few drops of basil extract into the infected ear. This reduces the pain and infection. Try the same with onion juice.

Grind 3-4 boiled garlic cloves and add a pinch of salt. Prepare a dressing with this and place it on the infested ear.

If you feel cold, take a decongestant immediately. Continue the consumption only in medical supervision.

Put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into your ears to get relief from infection.

Having a hit shower will help to breakup and soften the wax formed.

Apart from these treatments, follow certain precautionary measures such as: avoiding cold food items, cold drinks, smoking, alcohol and spicy food. Include green leafy vegetables in your diet. Keep your ears clean using cotton and do not pick your ears with anything else such as pins, keys, and even fingers. Take precautions while you blow your nose and blow through one nostril at a time and blow gently without applying lot of pressure.

Hiccups are caused due to the irregular movement of the diaphragm or the irritation of the diaphragm. This makes the breath to move in a jerky pattern making a unique sound. It is also referred as the automatic contractions of the muscles of the diaphragm, which is the separation between the chest and stomach. Normally it lasts for about few minutes and rarely continues to hours and sometimes even days.

The causes for hiccups are many, such as: abdominal surgery, spicy food, gulping of large quantity of food, over stretching of neck, smoking, infection, drinking excessive alcohol, diabetes, Laryngitis, heartburn, irritation in eardrums etc. The only symptom of hiccups is the contraction of diaphragm resulting in continuous ‘hic’ sound from the throat.

The various remedies for treating hiccups include:

Boil half tbsp of cardamom powder in a glass of water till the volume reduces to half the volume. Cool the mixture and drink it slowly.

Try sipping ice water quickly. Or Drink a glass of soda water.

Placing an ice bag on the diaphragm will help in reducing hiccups.

Close your eyes and press your eyes gently.

Eat a tbsp of sugar will help in relieving from hiccups. Try the same with a tbsp of peanut butter.

Eat half a bowl of curds mixed with 1-2 tbsp of salt.

Eat small pieces of ginger to treat hiccups.

Hold your breath and try to gargle with water.

Inhale black pepper powder. This results in sneezing. This sometimes relieves you from hiccups.

Apart from these tips, avoid spicy or oily foods to avoid hiccups. The oily and spicy foods tend to create irritation in the inner lining of the esophagus. If the hiccups never stop and still continues for more than 24 hours, it is better to visit a doctor.

A hangover is a condition caused due to the excessive consumption of alcohol or any other drugs, i.e. the consumption of the alcohol or drug more than the amount that the body can actually resist or take it. It is associated with the after effects of the over consumption of alcohol and drugs.

The only cause for a hangover is the excessive consumption of drugs and/or alcohol. The symptoms of hangover are many, such as:

Dry mouth and the urge to wet your throat and tongue.

Bloodshot or reddish eyes or swollen eyes.

Headache is also a symptom of hangover.

Dizzy feeling or a sleepy feeling continues even after you wake up from sleep.

Nausea or vomiting sensation will be experienced.

The hangover condition can be treated using various home remedies, such as:

Consume a lot of water before going to bed so that there is enough liquid to avoid dehydrating effect of alcohol. Drink water even after you wake up.

It is better to have good amount of food while you consume alcohol. Even after consuming alcohol, have some food. This reduces the rate at which alcohol enters your blood.

Consuming vitamin C tablets helps in breaking down alcohol content in your body. Consume citrus fruits, apples and bananas to come out of hangover.

Caffeine and chocolates help in preventing hangovers.

Consuming raw cabbage will relieve headache symptoms of alcohol. Try cabbage juice and tomato juice to come out of hangover.

Consume 3-4 tsp of honey if you have hangover. If it is severe, increase the intake of honey.

Consume fresh lemon juice prepared with cold water and preferably less sugar to get relief from hangover. Also try consuming sugarless lemon tea.

It is better not to consume alcohol in empty stomach. The food absorbs some alcohol and helps in faster digestion.

Food rich in starch slows down alcohol absorption.

Avoid adding carbonated drinks to alcohol as it speeds up the alcohol absorption. Try to limit the consumption of alcohol.

Avoid sweet drinks or sweet food items while consuming alcohol.

These tips or home remedies will help you to get relief from hangover. It is always better to avoid alcohol consumption or take very less amount of alcohol to avoid further health complications.

Common cold is an inflammation or pain in the upper respiratory tract, usually caused by viral infections. It normally occurs more often than any other disease and hence the name common cold. It might last from five to ten days. It usually affects the nose, and sometimes affects the ears, bronchial tubes and sinuses.

The common causes may be the exposure to cold, lack of sleep, fatigue, depression and exposure to virus. Sometimes it is caused due to dust allergy, change in temperature and irritating inhalation. The symptoms of common cold include nasal congestion, headaches, throat irritation or sore throat, watery or red eyes, running nose, loss of sensing taste and smell.

The home remedies to treat common cold include:

Dilute one lemon in a glass of warm water and add one tsp of honey. Consume this drink twice a day. Lemon increases the resistance of your body.

Consume garlic soup by boiling 3-4 cloves of chopped garlic in water. you can also consume hot vegetable soups to get relief from cold.

Consume 4-5 drops of garlic oil mixed in a tsp of onion juice diluted in water, for about 3-4 times a day.

Cut about 10-15gms of ginger and boil in water. Add half tsp of sugar and consume this hot mixture. Adding ginger to the tea you consume will help in reducing cold.

Boil jaggery and black pepper in water and consume this hot drink to reduce cold.

Applying eucalyptus oil on forehead, nostrils and chest while sleeping will also help in curing cold.

If you are suffering from chest congestion, steam inhaling is best to reduce congestion. You can also add eucalyptus oil to it while inhaling.

Boil about 100gms of chopped lady’s finger in water till the water level reduces to half the volume. Consume this mixture when it is sufficiently hot.

Prepare a paste of bitter gourd roots mixed with honey and holy basil leaf juice. Consume this paste daily to reduce cold.

Boil half tsp of turmeric powder in about half glass of milk and consume this milk. It gives you quick relief from sore throat and cold.

Follow certain precautions to get rid of cold, such as: Avoiding foods that are not easily digestible such as dairy products, oily and spicy food. Take a walk in fresh air and have proper ventilation in your room. Follow proper precautions like covering your nose when your sneeze since cold can affect others around you. Also avoid cold drinks and cold food items.
