Insomnia is defined as the failure in getting sufficient amount of sleep. It is a sleep disorder and one has to remember that it is not a disease. Insomnia is a condition where the person finds difficulty in getting sleep or waking up very frequently. The causes of insomnia vary and it is divided into two categories, namely:

Primary insomnia which is the most common form and for which there is no specific condition. The causes are stress, changes in the surroundings, and side effects of some medicines or sometimes it may be caused due to excessive use of drugs or alcohol or by taking naps during day time.

Secondary causes can be characterized by certain physical or psychological conditions which includes disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome etc. The other causes include depression, respiratory or heart problems, arthritis and other health issues.

The basic signs of insomnia are when a person suffers any of the conditions such as extremes of fatigue, lack of concentration, depression, stress and anxiety very frequently. When these conditions are experienced along with trouble in sleeping, then the person is said to suffer from Insomnia.

There are various natural ways of treating insomnia naturally, such as:

Meditating for about 10-15 minutes before sleeping.

Follow the rule of having a breakfast that is king-size, lunch that is medium and a small dinner as a heavy dinner might put stress on the digestive system which in turn might affect your sleep.

If you are feeling stress at the time of sleep, try to listen to music that has a soothing of calming effect on you.

Drink plenty of water. Many people might have experiences of waking up in night to drink water. Minimize the amount of water intake from at least 4 hours from the time you sleep, as it might wake you up for urinating.

Have your body oil massaged for about 1-2 times per week which will de-stress and relax your body.

Limit the intake of chocolates and colas or food having caffeine and even smoking before going to bed.

Exercise sufficiently. But do not over strain yourself while exercising.

There are various other tips or techniques that will help you sleep better, such as- proper ventilation to your room, reading inspiring books, applying sesame/castor oil to foot and eyelids, a blue colored bed lamp and soaking your feet in warm water for 10 minutes before you go to sleep.
