Tinnitus is also known as the ringing in ear. Only a person suffering from this problem knows how bad it is. Tinnitus is a Latin word, which means ‘ringing’. Keeping the basic meaning aside, the person may experience a variety of sounds other than just ringing sound, such as ticking, hissing, whooshing, buzzing, droning, humming etc. But clinically speaking, the tinnitus is either a ringing sound of the buzzing sound heard in the ear. There are a few cases where the doctor can also hear this sound using acoustic instruments.

There are different types of tinnitus such as: unilateral (ringing heard only in one ear) or bilateral (ringing heard in both ears); the person suffering from Pulsatile tinnitus can hear his own heartbeats, where as in Somatic tinnitus the ringing lies outside the ears and Chronic sinusitis tinnitus is caused by thickened mucous trapped within the middle ear space. The tinnitus can be caused due to hypertension, a damaged nerve or other complicated problems such as a carotid artery disease or a tumor or a Intracranial vascular lesion.

A few first aid steps when you get tinnitus are:

Checking your pulse; a higher pulse rate often causes ear ringing.

Avoid consuming aspirin or any such similar medicines. Consume aspirin only as a last resort to get rid of the cause.

Avoid the intake of excessive salt. Sodium worsens the ear ringing problem. So, it is also better to stay away from food containing sodium.

Exercise well. Your body requires sufficient exercise to keep your body in shape. Thus controlling tinnitus.

Avoid sounds of high frequency and wear protection to reduce tinnitus.

Limit the intake of alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and sugary foods.

The best way to get rid of tinnitus is to consult the doctor. The entire standard and the accepted ways of treatment will relieve you from the problems by just treating the symptoms, without even finding the root cause of the problem. You can always prevent tinnitus by a few neck exercises, reduced caffeine intake, having quality sleep, proper visualization techniques, avoiding high frequency sounds and avoid high intake of sodium. By following these tips, you can be able to prevent tinnitus.
