Today I will be dealing with the process that involves setting up of wireless routers with a Windows Client. Surplus number of routers are available, amongst them I will be using Link Sys Wireless Router and I will be giving a detailed description regarding their installation and so on. The main advantage of Link Sys Routers is that, their installation takes place in a systematic and methodical way. The Setup Wizard is user friendly and intelligible to all. On completion of the setup, the user can customize the configuration to his fancy.

Instructions for Setting up of the Router:

1. Depending on your budget select a Link Sys Router that aptly suits your requirements.

2. Please see to that the antennas are connected to Router that you have purchased.

3. Do ensure that the Router is placed in a central location and also not surrounded by metal. The main reason being for this is, metals are opaque to signals. For better connectivity and good response you need to place the router at a distance which is almost equal between the two clients.

4. Connect the internet cable to the port which is located at the backside of the router.

5. The next step is establishing connection between the router and computer. For this, we require an Ethernet cable. Plug one of ends of the Ethernet cable into Ethernet port located at the backside of the computer and the other end at the port located at the back side of router. You have the freedom of connecting to any of the remaining ports in the router, except the one named “WAN”.

6. Switching on the router, is done by establishing an electrical connection between router and the mains.

7. Be patient enough to wait, for the router to boot. When the router is booting the power light flashes and keeps blinking. As soon as the power light stops blinking, it would have completed the booting process. This entire process takes few minutes.

8. Reboot/Restart the computer so that it would allow the system to extract a new IP address through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or abbreviated as “DHCP”.

Configuring the Router:

Open any browser for that matter you can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Fire Fox .Type the URL http://192.168.1.1/ in the address bar and press the “Enter” key.

A pop up box with fields User Name and Password appears. Type “admin” as username and leave the password field blank.

Connect to the internet by switching on the router. Select the “Internet Setup” option.

Choose your connection type from the dropdown box. If you are with a cable modem then select the option “DHCP “ or if you are with DSL modem then option would be PPPoE. If you are not able to figure out the type of modem, then kindly contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

For the purpose of identification of the router set the Service Set Identifier (SSID). You have the luxury of changing the password for better security.

Encryption of the Wireless Connection is done by using Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) Key. Select the Wireless Security option and enter a phrase of your choice. After which you need to click on the “generate” button. This process will generate a password that must be used by the users who are using your router.
