What Foods to Eat When Suffering from Diabetic Condition?

Diabetes has become a common disease. It occurs due to higher intake of sugar and sugar items. Sugar is necessary for our body and insulin is the hormone which helps sugar to convert into energy. The energy is provided to the cells of the body. When level of sugar gets high in your blood, it is dangerous for your health. Diabetes is termed as high cholesterol levels. The main cause of high cholesterol levels is when your muscles, fat and liver do not respond properly.

Basically, there are three types of diabetes- type 1 diabetes in which your body does not produce insulin. Other one is when your body does not use insulin effectively. This is known as type 2 diabetes. The third is gestational diabetes which occurs in pregnant women. Diabetes can develop a number of health disorders. For instance, it can damage your eyes, kidneys and nerves.

Balanced diet is extremely important to lower the high glucose levels. The two questions come in the mind, one is what to eat when you are diabetic and other is what not to eat if you have diabetes. It is better to answer the question one by one.

What to eat when you have diabetes?

  • You should eat foods which are rich in fiber and low in carbohydrates. Foods having fiber are- vegetables, fruits, lentils, peas, dried beans, whole grain products, legumes, cereals and oats. Always have salads in your diet because eating as raw helps more than cooking them.
  • Have foods which are high in omega 3 because it prevents the hardening of arteries. Foods containing omega 3 are- fish and tuna.
  • Omega 6 fatty acid helps prevent the growth of diabetes neuropathy. Borage oil, primrose oil and blackcurrant oil contain this acid.
  • Protein is an important vitamin that helps build tissues. So have foods which contain protein like, pork, eggs, chicken, peanuts and soya beans.
  • Cinnamon is regarded as one of the useful ingredient to lower the blood glucose levels. Have cinnamon in your foods that can help your body to use insulin more efficiently so that more energy can enter your tissues.

What not to eat in diabetes?

  • You should get away from sugar and its related items. It is the main ingredient which increases your blood sugar levels. Avoid certain foods like, ice-cream, honey, jam, pastries and jelly.
  • Avoid eating oily, junk, saturated and fatty foods.
  • Limit your intake of milk and other dairy products.
  • Do not consume alcohol and cold drinks. High intake of alcohol can cause heart disease and other health disorders.

You should avoid eating high sodium foods. Salty fish have high content of sodium.
